The short answer

Signs of a nest

Wasp and hornet nests grow through the summer and are usually at their largest from late summer into early fall.

Steady traffic

Wasps flying in and out of the same gap in the siding, soffit, deck or ground.

A paper nest

A grey, papery nest under the eaves, in a tree, a shed or an attic.

Chewing or buzzing in a wall

A hidden nest inside a wall or roof can sometimes be heard before it is seen.

Bee and wasp identification guide

Honey bees

Slightly hairy and more orange than yellow jackets. They use cracks and crevices to reach their nests. We do not exterminate honey bees.

Yellow jackets

Smooth and bright yellow, often mistaken for honey bees. Nests are usually well hidden, sometimes in sheds and attics.

Bumble bees

Large, fuzzy, black and yellow. They like to nest near the ground, in the earth or in insulation.

Bald-faced hornets

Nest in high places like trees, eaves and attics. The nests are grey paper balls, often in plain view.

Paper (umbrella) wasps

Black and yellow, with legs that hang down in flight. The nest looks like an open honeycomb and is easy to see.

Carpenter bees

Hairy and one colour, usually tan, brown or black. They bore perfectly round holes into unpainted wood, with sawdust and a yellow stain below.

Treatment

How we remove nests

Wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, bumblebees

Nest treatment and removal

How we treat the nest depends on whether we can reach it.

  • A reachable nest is treated directly with a compound that works within minutes, then removed and disposed of
  • A nest we cannot reach, inside a wall or roof, is treated at the entry points with a powder the insects carry back inside
  • Depending on the species, a hidden nest can take 10 to 14 days to be fully eliminated
Carpenter bees

Carpenter bee treatment

Carpenter bees live on their own in holes they bore into wood, so we treat each hole.

  • Powder is applied in the holes so it gets on the bees as they pass through
  • Nearby wood is treated with a residual as well
  • We treat the entry holes. We do not seal them
  • Treatment typically takes 7 to 10 days to take full effect

We never exterminate honey bees

Honey bees are essential pollinators, and killing their nests harms the local ecosystem. If you have a honey bee nest, we recommend a local beekeeper who can relocate it without harming the bees. Not sure what you have? Send us a photo and we will help you identify it.

How it works

What happens after you call.

  1. Call or send a photo

Tell us where the nest is and how high. A photo helps us identify the species.

  2. Identify

We confirm what you have. If it is honey bees, we tell you and point you to a beekeeper.

  3. Treat the nest

Direct treatment and removal, or an entry point treatment for a hidden nest.

  4. Nest removed

A reachable nest is removed on the visit. A hidden nest can take 10 to 14 days, depending on the species.

Safety and preparation

Before and after your visit.

Keep children and pets away from the nest area until the treatment has done its work.

Do not seal the entry hole of a hidden nest yourself. Trapped wasps can chew their way into the house.

What affects the price

  • How high off the ground the nest is
  • The number and size of the nests
  • The number and location of entry points
  • The species of bee or wasp
  • Nests higher than 30 feet may need a visit before we can quote

FAQ

Wasps, Hornets and Bees: common questions.

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call 905-385-1818. The phone is answered 24 hours a day.

How much does wasp nest removal cost?

It depends mostly on how high the nest is, how many nests there are, the number of entry points and the species. Nests higher than 30 feet may need a visit before we can quote. Call 905-385-1818 for an estimate on the phone.

Do you remove honey bees?

No. Honey bees are essential pollinators, so we do not exterminate them. We recommend a local beekeeper who can relocate the nest without harming the bees. We do treat wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, bumblebees and carpenter bees.

How long does wasp nest treatment take?

A nest we can reach is treated directly and removed on the visit. A hidden nest inside a wall or roof is treated at the entry points and can take 10 to 14 days, depending on the species.

Do you seal carpenter bee holes?

No. We treat the entry holes so the bees pick up the powder as they pass through, but we do not seal them.

How do I tell a honey bee from a yellow jacket?

Honey bees are slightly hairy and more orange. Yellow jackets are smooth and bright yellow. If you are not sure, send us a photo and we will help you identify it before anything is treated.

Should I plug the hole the wasps are using?

No. Blocking the entry of a hidden nest can force the wasps to chew a new way out, sometimes into the house. Leave the hole open and let the treatment do its work.
