Bed Bug Treatment Preparation Checklist

Bed bugs are a serious and challenging pest, and your preparation is essential to the treatment working. Thank you for doing your part.

Print this page or keep it open on your phone. Questions? Call 905-385-1818, 24 hours a day.

Before the treatment

  1. Put clothes, linens, bedding and stuffed animals in a dryer (a commercial dryer if you can) for at least 45 minutes on the highest heat. Then tie them in garbage bags like a balloon, or store them in a clear plastic bag or tote.

  2. Dry-clean clothing that cannot be laundered. We recommend leaving these items at the cleaners between the first treatment and the follow-up visit.

  3. In closets, leave the hanging clothes where they are. They do not need to go through the dryer. Just empty the closet floor so we can reach and treat the baseboards inside the closet.

  4. Empty dressers, nightstands and chests into clear plastic bags or sealed totes.

  5. Vacuum floors, carpets and rugs if you can. Use the crevice tool around baseboards, bed frames, sofas and other furniture. Throw out the bag or contents after.

  6. Leave recently used luggage empty so it can be inspected and treated if needed.

  7. Remove all mattress and box spring covers and linens before we arrive, unless you already have encasements made for bed bugs.

  8. There is no need to move furniture away from the walls. We flip and move it ourselves during the treatment.

  9. There is no need to bag shoes. Leave them out and move them about 2 feet away from the baseboards.

  10. Remove electrical faceplates in the problem areas.

  11. Cover or remove fish and reptile tanks, and turn off aquarium air filters during the treatment.

Time out of the home

People and all pets stay out of the home during the treatment and for at least 6 hours after it is finished. Anyone pregnant or with breathing problems stays out for 24 hours.

After the treatment

  • You must stay and sleep in your home, in the treated rooms, after the treatment. Bed bugs are drawn to the carbon dioxide you breathe out. Sleeping in the treated areas draws them across the treatment, which kills them and is not harmful to you once dry.
  • Do not move furniture or shampoo or steam any soft surfaces, including carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture and drapes, until the last treatment is done.
  • You can vacuum as needed. Change the bag after each use, or empty a bagless canister, double-bag the contents and put them outside right away.
